29 November 2018 - The Government of Mexico and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime presented today the opium poppy cultivation survey on Mexico covering the periods of 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. The report estimates that opium poppy cultivation increased by 21 per cent in the country between these time periods, representing a net increase of 5,400 hectares.
To enhance asset recovery in West and Central Asia by sharing experiences on domestic and international legislation as well as policy and procedures, UNODC and the General Prosecutors Office of Kazakhstan hosted the launch meeting of the regional Asset Recovery Inter-Agency Network West and Central Asia (ARIN-WCA) from 22 to 23 November in Astana, Kazakhstan.
25 November - Around 87,000 women were killed around the world last year, some 50,000 - or 58 per cent - at the hands of intimate partners or family members. This amounts to some six women being killed every hour by people they know, according to new research published by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) today.
23 November 2018 - Judges must comply with legal and ethical ramifications when using technology. This is particularly the case when considering social media platforms, which have become ubiquitous in the last few years. In order to close this gap, there is a need for education, training and recommendations on how social media can affect its users. This was the starting consensus of 25 judges and judicial experts from five continents, gathered at UNODC early-November by the Global Judicial Integrity Network.
21 November 2018 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Regional Office for Central Asia and the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan, hosted a two-day "Meeting on Monitoring and Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals: Supporting the five Central Asian states, Azerbaijan and Georgia," in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 12 to 13 November.
20 November 2018 - Opium originating in Afghanistan is a threat to safety and security in Asia and beyond. Among other things it fuels organized crime, helps finance terrorism, and endangers health. The Paris Pact Initiative, a broad international coalition dedicated to countering the threats linked to illicit traffic in opiates from Afghanistan, identified eight key recommendations to advance its work during a high-level expert group meeting in Beijing, China.
19 November - The total area under opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan remains at very high levels despite a decrease by 20 per cent. The potential production of opium decreased by 29 per cent in 2018 compared to last year, while farm-gate prices hit an all-time low, according to the 2018 Afghanistan Opium Survey released today.
16 November 2018 - The importance of a well-governed and accountable security sector in effectively addressing transnational organized crime, including trafficking in persons and illicit drugs, corruption and terrorism, was the focus of a sub-regional expert-level workshop for senior practitioners and policy-makers from Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine in Minsk on 14 and 15 November 2018.
16 November 2018 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the respective national authorities of Ireland, Romania and Serbia, in partnership with Walk Free Foundation, have carried out studies to estimate the number of victims of trafficking in persons in these three countries. The studies made use of the Multiple Systems Estimation (MSE) methodology and found that, in 2016, there were nearly 200 trafficking victims in Ireland, around 1,200 in Romania and 970 in Serbia.
12 November 2018 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Afghanistan, Japan and the Russian Federation signed a declaration today, overviewing the past achievements and highlighting the new development of the Trilateral Cooperation between UNODC, Japan and Russia to support counter narcotics efforts of the Government of Afghanistan.

Speaking in New York this week at a special event, UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov led an interesting panel marking the importance of education in this respect.
1 November 2018 - Globally, children face an increasing risk of economic and sexual exploitation, abuse, neglect and violence. The trafficking, recruitment, and exploitation of children by terrorist and violent extremist groups is among these risks and addressing it requires international cooperation. East African and international experts gathered in Vienna from 22 to 24 October to discuss measures to protect children from these threats.
