61st-birthday-goodluck-jonathan-to-launch-book-my-transition-hours-tuesday-reno/

On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, the Face of Democracy in Africa, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, will be 61 years old. On that same day, he will be presenting his brilliant book, My Transition Hours, to the public.
Jonathan
Finally, through that book, the world will get to see the man behind close doors and will, I hope, found out that no Nigerian leader has shown the level of self sacrifice, self control and restraint that former President Jonathan showed during and after his five year tenure as President.
However, because of a long succession of brutal military dictators beginning from 1966 and continuing even into the advent of the Fourth Republic, many Nigerians have been conditioned to see brutality as strength and restraint as weakness. But after three years of a brutal and brutally ineffective President, many citizens are only coming to know now what I knew in 2010-that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is a leader of men who sees the people as the big picture rather than himself. He tried to show Nigerians the true meaning of leadership. Unfortunately, the psyche of our people has for long been conditioned to respecting leaders who rule, who boss and who throw their weight around. It was a culture shock to have a leader who rather than throw his considerable weight around, three his intellect around, which is why no leader in Nigeria’s history has built as many schools as Dr. Jonathan did. And the thing is that he did not have to. Primary education is the constitutional preserve of the states. Yet President Jonathan built 165 almajiri schools because he could not sit by and watch as 11 million Nigerian children, mostly in the North, were out of the school system. Not stopping there, he built fourteen new universities comprising of twelve new federal universities and two specialised universities. Before Jonathan, 12 Nigerian states had no federal universities. After Jonathan, no Nigerian state was without at least one university. I had the privilege of asking him why he did what he did and he told me in California, while playing with my children, as follows ‘Reno, no investment yields as much profit as education’. Indeed, Jonathan is a philosopher king! From him, I learnt that the best way to be a leader is not to boss people around, but to help solve their problems. Think of it this way. There are many ships in the sea and the sea is dark. If you want all the ships to come to you, then be a lighthouse and they will come to you of their own accord. I remember when I joined him on a trip to London and at the airport, the Nigerian High Commission to the U.K. had provided a Mercedes sedan to pick him up from the airport. I was to join him at his hotel, so I escorted him to the car with another of his associates. He got in and then looked at me and asked what I was waiting for. I told him I would get a taxi and he goes, ‘don’t be silly’, then does the most amazing thing. He shifted to the middle of the back seat and beckoned on my friend and I to join him on what is known as the owners’ corner in Nigeria. I know of no other leader with the humility to do that. A quintessential leader is Dr. Jonathan. A man who treated everyone with respect even though he was the President of the largest Black nation on earth who led her to become Africa’s economy. One thing you can be sure of is that if President Jonathan is looking down at you, he is doing so only because he is admiring your shoes. I learnt true humility from him, but it was in the area of communication that President Jonathan schooled me the best. From him I discovered that learning the art of communication will make you a leader. Dr. Jonathan never speak just to express yourself. He considers that a waste of time. Rather, he always speaks to persuade others. When others are talking, he listens to them as if they are the most important persons on earth. Honestly, it is an almost ecstatic event to have a one on one communication with Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. As he turns 61 today, I want to remind Nigerians of a statement he made four years ago. On the 7th of March 2014, then President Jonathan said “I am loyal to Nigeria’s economy. I don’t have accounts or property abroad. All my children school in Nigeria”. Till date, nobody has been able to contradict that statement because it is true. But even more impressive is the fact that not one of those who have made it their career to blame Jonathan for everything that is wrong with their lives, can say the same thing. Dr. Jonathan was able to achieve this because he was a patriot who really believes in Nigeria. Look at his initiatives to turn around the lives of Nigerian youths. You have the Youth Enterprise With Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin), the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovations and Development scholarships (PRESSID) to First Class graduates of Nigerian universities to mention a few. With these schemes, it is no wonder that Nigeria under Jonathan became the third fastest growing economy in the world according to CNNMoney and the International Monetary Fund. Nowadays, those who rode to power on the back of the freedoms that Dr. Jonathan ensured in Nigeria now threaten to lock up their critics citing ‘hate speech’. Have these individuals ever sat down to consider that under Jonathan’s leadership, not one single person was sent to prison because of anything he or she wrote or said about the President or the government he headed. Nigeria had no political prisoners under Jonathan’s administration and the nation certainly did not have any prisoners of conscience because Jonathan himself ensured that he acted according to his conscience in all he did. On social media, I read many Nigerian youths saying things like, how did we go from ‘my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian’ to being called lazy Nigerian youths? That is one question I cannot answer. But one thing I know, the Nigerian youth under President Jonathan were some of the most talented and productive. That is why Nigeria was rated by Gallup as the happiest nation in the world under Jonathan. Think about that for a minute and then join me in wishing Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan a very well deserved happy birthday as well as a long and fulfilled life to continue serving humanity through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.

Air Force Pilot Who Died In Abuja Jet Crash Buried

Baba-Ari, who was a Squadron Leader, was one of the three pilots involved in the crash in Abuja.

Bello Mohamed Baba-Ari, the Nigerian Air Force pilot, who died in a F-7Ni aircraft crash in Abuja on Friday, has been buried according to Islamic rites.
Baba-Ari, who was a Squadron Leader, was one of the three pilots involved in the incident that occurred in Katamkpe Hill at the country's capital.
Though Baba-Ari was said to have ejected from the aircraft, he later died due to complications from injuries sustained.
Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, disclosed this via a statement.
He described the late Baba-Ari as "a gentleman officer, distinguished pilot, dedicated patriot and irrefutable hero of the war on terror".
In an update on the crash, Daramola also noted that NAF had instituted an air crash investigation into the incident.
The statement read: "Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) F-7Ni aircraft taking part in the rehearsals for the aerial display to mark Nigeria’s 58th Independence Anniversary Celebrations were involved in an air incident today, 28 September 2018.
"The air mishap necessitated the 3 pilots to eject from their aircraft, which subsequently crashed in the general area of Katamkpe Hill. Regrettably, however, one of them later died due to complications from injuries sustained upon impact on the ground. Thankfully, there were no civilian casualties.
"The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on behalf of officers, airmen and airwomen of the NAF, commiserates with the family of the deceased officer. The CAS has also instituted an air crash investigation to determine the remote and immediate causes of the incident."

Nigerian economy: What we did during Jonathan govt – Okonjo-Iweala

Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Friday said part of what the Goodluck Jonathan administration did to improve the Nigerian economy was target setting.
She said this while calling for a massive education of insurance policy makers in the country to achieve deep insurance penetration among the populace.
Okonjo-Iweala told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Busan, South Korea, on the sideline of the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB), that insurance penetration in Africa and Nigeria in particular was very low.
“As the world is experiencing so much uncertainties and a lot of volatility in the economy, people really need to think more deeply about insurance and how they can help protect themselves and their families, even their countries against these risks,” she stated.
She said insurance penetration in Africa was as low as three per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and about 0.3 per cent of GDP in Nigeria, stressing the need for proper enlightenment and education of the populace.
“We really need to move forward; there is a lot of opportunities, so we need massive education and insurance companies must take some responsibilities by working with government in this direction.
“We should set ourselves some targets; we were beginning to do that earlier on when we were in government; to see if we could really, by 2020, 2025, 2030, set targets of having insurance penetrate deeply,” she said

How Jonathan paid N17billion before 2015 budget was passed – Okonjo-Iweala

Former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has revealed that the National Assembly forced the Goodluck Jonathan administration to part with N17billion before they passed the 2015 Budget.
According to her, it came at a time crude oil price had gone down drastically.
The N17billion alleged bribe, according to Okonjo-Iweala in her book ‘Fighting Corruption is Dangerous: The Story Behind the Headlines’, was besides the National Assembly’s N150billion annual ‘standard’ budget.
Her words: “The legislature was concerned largely about three things—the size of its own budget; the nature and the size of the capital budget, particularly investment projects; and the number and geographical location of the projects.
“Senators and Representatives felt that their role as appropriators of the budget was not just to vet and approve budget parameters and oversee budget implementation, but also to shape the size and content of the budgets, including details of specific projects.”
She said members of the National Assembly Finance and Appropriation even felt ”they had the right–indeed the duty–to get into the details of the budget formulation and preparation process all along the budget value chain.”
Okonjo-Iweala said the NASS leadership, working through the various committees, “sought to add more to individual projects or create completely new, unappropriated major projects, thereby distorting the budget.”
But she explained that “not all National Assembly members supported these unfortunate manipulations of the budget.”
The former Minister added: “National Assembly members had negotiated large increases in the National Assembly budgets and would brook no discussions or challenges on the issue.
“Their operational budget had ballooned to N150 billion or 16 per cent of the budget and almost 3.5 times the 2006 budget (in naira).”
Okonjo-Iweala said when it was proposed that the lawmakers should give up some of their benefits in view of dwindling revenue in 2015, they refused to do so.
“By the time we presented the budget on December 16, 2014, oil prices had fallen further to $58 per barrel.
“We were prepared and we knew we had to trigger the additional expenditure and revenue measures in 2015 to make the budget work.
“This would be tough, given that we had entered an election year,” she said.
“Indeed, legislators initially refused to accept any cuts to their regular N150 billion budget, despite dwindling revenues.
“But eventually, they agreed to a 13 per cent cut against a backdrop of ministers accepting a voluntary 50 per cent cut to their basic salaries.
“In a tough session with the National Assembly’s ad hoc committee on the budget (made up of chairs of the Finance Committee and Appropriation Committee of both chambers and other leaders of the National Assembly), an additional N20 billion was re-introduced as election expenses for National Assembly members.
“We insisted the amount be dropped because it nullified the 13 per cent cut made to their statutory budget, but managed to reduce the N20 billion figure by only N3 billion to N17 billion.
“This became the price to pay to have the 2015 budget passed.”
Okonjo-Iweala was Jonathan’s finance minister from August 17, 2011 to May 29, 2015.

Prince Harry pays tribute to late mother Princess Diana in 'a tearful speech' at royal wedding reception, report says

There were lots of mixed emotions during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding festivities on Saturday.
A source opens up to ET about some touching moments at the couple’s lunchtime reception at St. George's Hall in Windsor Castle that was hosted by Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Anytime Harry referred to Meghan as “his wife,” the guests cheered, the source notes.
According to the source, Harry asked if anyone could play the piano and Elton John -- Diana's friend -- happily obliged, and performed four songs, including, “The Circle of Life,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Our Song” and “I’m Still Standing.” The source says Harry is a huge Disney and Lion King fan, adding that he and Meghan once went on a date to see "Moana".
During the evening reception at Frogmore House, the source tells ET that Kate Middleton, Prince William and Harry all hit the dance floor with their celebrity friends, and British actor Idris Elba even took a turn DJ’ing at one point. To toast the couple, ET has learned that there was a ginger-and-rum cocktail in honor of the newlyweds.

Also at the evening reception, one of Prince William and Prince Harry’s closest friends, Charlie van Straubenzee, gave a “hilarious and naughty speech,” which roasted Harry, according to the source.
“It left the crowd in stitches,” the source says. “William had warned Harry before the wedding that it was payback time.”

Australian archbishop convicted of child sex abuse cover-up

Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson, who was the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in the world charged with covering up child sex abuse, was convicted Tuesday and faces a potential two years in prison.
An Australian archbishop who was the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in the world charged with covering up child sex abuse was convicted Tuesday and faces a potential two years in prison.
Magistrate Robert Stone handed down the verdict against Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson in Newcastle Local Court, north of Sydney, following a magistrate-only trial.
Wilson, 67, had pleaded not guilty to knowing of the crimes of a pedophile priest in the 1970s. He denied under oath in court last month that two former altar boys ever told him that they had been sexually abused by a priest.
Wilson, who has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, said he had known one of the former altar boys and his family when he was an assistant priest in the Hunter Valley region north of Sydney in the mid-1970s.
But the archbishop said he had no memory of the boy telling him in 1976 he had been sexually abused by priest James Fletcher five years earlier when he was 10.
Wilson told the court the conversation was unlikely to have occurred because the former altar boy, when giving evidence in December, alleged he went into graphic detail about what Fletcher had done to him.
“I don’t think I would have forgotten that,” Wilson told the court.
Asked by his lawyer Stephen Odgers what he would have done if the boy had told him about the abuse, Wilson said his first priority would have been to provide pastoral care to the then-15-year-old boy and his family.
The archbishop said he would also have reported the allegations to his superiors.
Fletcher was found guilty in 2004 of nine counts of child sexual abuse and died in jail of a stroke in 2006, while serving an almost eight-year sentence.
Wilson told the court he had not been aware that Fletcher had abused boys.
Asked by Odgers if he had had any suspicions about Fletcher, Wilson replied: “No, I had none.”
The former altar boy alleged he trusted Wilson would take action against the pedophile priest after revealing the abuse, but Wilson did nothing.
The second former altar boy alleged he was about 11 in 1976 when he went into the confessional box to tell Wilson that Fletcher had abused him.
The witness alleged Wilson told him he was telling lies because Fletcher “was a good bloke.” The witness said Wilson had ordered him out of the confessional and told to recite 10 Hail Mary prayers as an act of contrition.
Wilson said he had no memory of seeing the second altar boy at all in 1976 and he would never accuse anyone in the confessional of telling lies.
Questioned about his health, Wilson said the prescribed medication he was taking to treat his Alzheimer’s had helped improve his memory, “although it’s not perfect.”

US sends powerful warship to Japan amid looming Trump-Kim summit

The U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Milius (DDG69) arrives to join Forward Deployed Naval Forces at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, Japan May 22, 2018.
One of the U.S. Navy’s most advanced guided missile destroyers arrived in Japan on Tuesday, weeks before the expected summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The USS Milius strengthens defenses against any potential ballistic missile strikes by North Korea. The move is supposed to be a reminder to Pyongyang of the U.S. military might and the pressure it is capable of applying if the meeting fails to lead to denuclearization, Reuters reported.
The warship will “support security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region by bringing enhanced missile defense capabilities as a ballistic missile defense platform,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement.
The destroyer is able to shoot down warheads in space and will become part of a naval destroyer force that is the first line of U.S. line of defense against missiles shot by North Korea.
The Milius’s arrival also coincides with doubts that the meeting might not happen after North Korea protested over recent U.S.-South Korean air combat drills.
North Korean officials also said they aren’t interested in having a meeting if the U.S. only insist on them unilaterally abandoning its nuclear weapons.
Trump fired back saying that failure to come up with an agreement that would denuclearize the regime may be the end of the Kim dynasty in the region.

Hawaii volcano activity prompts new threats as man seriously injured from lava spatter

A man was seriously injured when he was hit with lava spatter while standing on his third-floor balcony — the first known injury related to Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano eruptions as new volcanic activity creates new threats in surrounding neighborhoods.
The homeowner on Noni Farms Road in Pahoa was hit with lava on the shin and taken to the hospital with serious injuries, Janet Snyder, spokeswoman for the Office of the Mayor, told Reuters.

"It hit him on the shin, and shattered everything from there down on his leg," Snyder said, adding that the lava spatter could weigh “as much as a refrigerator.”
“And even small pieces of spatter can kill,” she said.
No other information about the man and his condition were released as of Sunday morning.

Lava oozing out of the 22 fissures that opened since Kilauea volcano began erupting more than two weeks ago on the Big Island has wreaked havoc in surrounding neighborhoods. Officials on Sunday said there were reports of increased sulfur dioxide emissions as two lava flows entered the ocean.

To add to the dangers, officials also warned residents of laze, which could cause serious health hazards.
“Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air,” Civil Defense Agency said. “Health hazards of laze include lung, eye and skin irritation. Be aware that the laze plume travels with the wind and can change direction without warning.”
Another four homes were destroyed Friday and Saturday, totaling to nearly four dozen structures demolished. A handful of people were trapped when a flow crossed a road Friday. Some had to be airlifted to safety.
"They shouldn't be in that area," said County Managing Director Wil Okabe.
“Fast-moving” flows on Saturday from fissure 20 in the volcano’s lower east rift zone ignited brush fires and incinerated everything in its path, Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency reported. Photos and videos from the scene showed a flow as smoke billowed from the edges where the bright red lava touched.
“County and state fire units are in the area, going door-to-door to make sure people are informed and check if they need assistance. Everyone needs to stay clear of this area,” officials said.
By Saturday night, the lava cut off Highway 137, a key escape route for residents in the area, at the 13-mile marker. Officials said they were monitoring a second flow early Sunday that was inching closer to the highway. Portions of Highway 137 and Highway 130 were closed.

The Big Island volcano released a small explosion at its summit just before midnight Friday, sending an ash cloud 10,000 feet into the sky. On Thursday, an “explosive” eruption emitted ash and rocks 30,000 feet into the sky.
Evacuation orders for two neighborhoods with nearly 2,000 people were given after a first fissure opened on May 3. Officials have been warning neighboring communities to be prepared to evacuate.
