Nigeria Senate has expressed worries over the heightened insecurity in the North East, saying that child suicide bombings in the zone has increased in 2017 compared to previous times.
In a motion sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume representing Borno South Senatorial district, he explained that the level of attacks by insurgents has escalated to a worrisome level.
Giving the figures on 2017 attacks and its casualties, the lawmaker said: “357 civilians were killed during 55 attacks.”
“The deadliest month was in August when the militant group killed 100 people, followed by November with 76 people already killed.”
He also reminded the Senate that 103 Chibok girls, 10 women from Askira/Uba and 3 staff of University of Maiduguri were still being held captive.
Reacting, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu acknowledging the spate of attacks, saying Adamawa and Yobe States were also not left out.
He urged the Senate to allow Committee on National Security handle the matter.
Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki referred the motion to Senator Ahmed Lawan led Committee on National Security.
