Social media platform, Twitter, has placed a ban on political adverts, saying “political message should be earned not bought”.
In a tweet on Wednesday, the Chief Executive Officer of the platform, Jack Dorsey, said that the decision was made not to check the increasing velocity, sophistication and overwhelming scale of deep fakes.
The statement reads, “ We’ve made the decision to stop all political advertising on Twitter globally.
"We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought. Why? A few reasons.
"A political message earns reach when people decide to follow an account or retweet.
"Paying for reach removes that decision, forcing highly optimised and targeted political messages on people.
"We believe this decision should not be compromised by money.
"While Internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.
"Internet political ads present entirely new challenges to civic discourse: machine learning-based optimisation of messaging and micro-targeting, unchecked misleading information, and deep fakes all at increasing velocity, sophistication, and overwhelming scale.
"These challenges will affect all Internet communication, not just political ads.
"Best to focus our efforts on the root problems, without the additional burden and complexity taking money brings. Trying to fix both means fixing neither well, and harms our credibility."

Damilola Ogunbiyi
A Nigerian lady, Ms. Damilola Ogunbiyi, has been appointed as the Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for the United Nations Secretary-general, António Guterres.
Ogunbiyi's appointment was announced on Tuesday by Guterres as he also said that she would act as the Co-Chair of United Nations-Energy.
The announcement comes as the world is about to enter the final decade to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) - access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030.
Ogunbiyi succeeds Rachel Kyte of the United Kingdom as Special Representative, Co-Chair of United Nations-Energy, and CEO of SEforALL, the UN says.
“Ms. Ogunbiyi brings extensive leadership experience and a track record of supporting energy access in Sub-Saharan Africa to these roles.
“She was the first woman to be appointed as Managing Director of the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency.
“She is also responsible for implementing the Nigerian Off Grid Electrification Programme and successfully negotiating the Nigerian Electrification Project to rapidly construct solar mini-grids and deploy solar home systems across Nigeria,” the UN said.
SEforALL is an international organisation headquartered in Vienna, Austria, that is dedicated to helping the world achieve SDG7 and Paris Agreement targets.
The Presidential Support Committee has described as diversionary criticisms trailing President Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to the United Kingdom enroute Saudi Arabia.
The President is currently attending the Economic Forum of the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Condemnation had trailed the official disclosure that Buhari would travel to the UK on a private visit after his official trip to Saudi Arabia, with reports quoting interest groups and politicians from the opposition camp as saying he was abdicating his official responsibilities.
PSC in a statement by its Director of Communications and Strategic Planning, Mallam Gidado Ibrahim, on Tuesday faulted critics of the President’s diplomatic shuttles, maintaining that the trips do not have adverse effect on governance in the country.
The committee said it is becoming glaring that the opposition, as alternative government, is bereft of constructive ideas to contribute to the nation’s development, and to cover up for the deficiencies it has resorted to distorting facts and realities on ground.
The statement read, "We are aware that similar trips to the UK in the past had stirred animated discussions about the state of the President’s health but the latest announcement by the Presidency did not indicate that the planned trip to the UK is on health grounds.
"The President is entitled to rest. The opposition should stop spreading fake news and making inciting remarks."
The PSC further said it amounts to crying wolf where there is none for the opposition to claim that Buhari’s trip to the UK amounts to absconding from home instead of tackling the rising insecurity and other challenges in the country.
The Nigerian Governors’ Forum on Monday said the consequential increment in the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage would depend on the capacity of each state government.
Chairman of the group and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He said, “The forum as the representative body of the states keenly followed what happened in the negotiations that led to that template.
“As far as we are concerned, the best the forum can do is to stick with what has been agreed with the states. States are part of the tripartite negotiations.
“States agreed to that N30,000 minimum wage increase.
“States also know that there will be consequential adjustment but that will be determined by what happens on the state-by-state basis.
“Because there are different number of workers and different issues at the state level.
“Every state has its own trade union joint negotiating committee and they will undertake this discussion with their state governments.”

Omoyele Sowore SaharaReporters Media
Residents of Haworth, New Jersey, United States of America, has said that starting from Monday (today), a yellow ribbon with inscription “#FreeSoworeNow” would be placed at strategic points within the community every day until pro-democracy activist, Omoyele Sowore, is released by the Nigerian Government.
The Bergen County community made this known on Monday in an invite to sent to residents and neighbours.
The community sympathise with Sowore’s family whom had not seen their father and husband for over 87 days.
In a notice, the community said, “The Bergen County community is coming together to tie 87 Yele Ribbons to unite, support and pray for Sowore’s safe return home.
“The yellow ribbon has long been a symbol for absent and missing loved ones.
“For each day until Sowore’s safe return home, an additional ribbon will be added. #FreeSoworeNow.”
The community described Sowore as a man known for his dedication to truth and his efforts towards a Nigeria that works for all citizens regardless of socio-economic background, religion or ethnicity.
Sowore was arrested by the DSS in Lagos on August 3, 2019 for calling on Nigerians to take to the streets in peaceful demonstrations to express their displeasure at the poor state of governance in the country.
The government is charging Sowore for insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and planning to bring down his government – charges the pro-democracy campaigner vehemently denies and that had been described by legal practitioners across and beyond Nigeria as laughable and baseless.
The case has been fixed for November 6, 7 and 8 for accelerated trial by the court.
